Construction Cloud

I walked to Brooklyn yesterday. And I'm happy to report that despite what folks might think, I can walk on water. The East River did a fine job in supporting me. Ok so I simply walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. I had been studying at my local Starbucks and on the way home I decided that I was sick of the same ol' Broadway. So I headed east and walked by City Hall. I caught part of one of the bridge's tower in the corner of my eye and hadn't really seen it full on yet so I ventured in its direction. I saw people coming from it and going toward it and decided that now was the time to see it for myself. On the way over, I looked at the historical insights that line various points of the bridge. A quick glance south yielded my first eye-level view of the Statue of Liberty. My thoughts then went to my great grandfather, Camiel Pickavet, as he strode in at the age of 24 in 1906 (according to ellisisland.org). Then my thoughts turned to the Manhattan skyline. Knowing the impending anniversary makes it prevalent in my mind, even though I wasn't here. Living five blocks from it is a surreal experience.

The subway I ascend from every day is across the street from the church that contains victims' clothing, letters, candles, etc., on the fence. Not to mention endless vendors selling photos, t-shirts and the like. I haven't actually been by the site. I'm not sure why, though. Maybe out of respect. But you can tell what used to be there. Maybe it's the lights that are always on. The cranes. The fencing.

I can just walk down the street and look in that direction. I'd say it's about a (New York) six-minute walk. Enough of that. I just found out yesterday that one of my roommates is the voice of Young Nala the Lioness in Disney's animated hit "The Lion King." She was also in a movie called "CB4." But I've never heard of that one. Tomorrow is the first time I have my Sociology of Race class. I'm looking forward to it. My headache is preventing me from thinking about anything else to mention.
