Memoirization

I'm taking a break from the memoir assignment that is due on Tuesday. I have 1,088 words so far. I can go to 1,500. I've been sitting in this one paragraph for about 20 minutes and I can tell that I've already learned some things about story development and leading readers along a path free of debris.

I learned some of it in class, but I also believe I learned some of it as I was writing (am writing/haven't looked at it in two months/is due in three) my short story. (I really need to get back to that.) It's definitely interesting to get some distance from something and then go back to it and realize how inadequate it is. Sentences are too choppy. One thought from one does not smoothly lead into the next one. So I've added already 100 words just in this section just by adding and tweaking. And I have to say, I actually enjoyed it. Congratulations to the Chicago Cubs for knocking off the Atlanta Braves (sorry, Dave). This should be an interesting post-season. Let's see, what other bullshit can I write about? Oh, I went to K-Mart today. I bought a trash can for the kitchen, trash bags for the trash can, a can of Pledge, dust wipe glove things, a Joe Boxer scarf, 30 coat hangers, a tea kettle, and a four-pack of boxer briefs. I wrote a little about identity after doing some reading for my 60s class. I decided not to take the GRE. I'm wearing thermal underwear under my sweats. I'm tired because I finally got to sleep just before 5 a.m. this morning and woke up at 10. And I'm typing by candlelight. How else am I doing? Minute by minute, right? Tomorrow: Elizabeth at 4 p.m.
