Still Here
And although I have much to spout, I can't find the energy. I will say, though, that something awesome happened last week.
I had an appointment with Elizabeth. I was in a good mood, so it was a particularly good session. As I was handing her money, I said, "at least my stories are interesting." She took the dough, rolled her eyes, and said "you're gonna leave me with that? I can't have you coming in here thinking you have to entertain me."
Uh-oh, I thought to myself. Think quickly.
"I don't."
"We have to get to the meaning behind the stories," she said.
"We do. We did today, right?" (Dramatic pause.) "You have to admit, though, they are entertaining."
She rolled her eyes again. And I picked up again something I mentioned to her a couple of months ago. "You can totally write articles about me, though."
"Sure, but I'm not gonna use your name."
"You can," I said. She was surprised with that, which was when I changed my mind, but then she said, "Well, actually, I was thinking. And this is way down the road, that we could maybe write something together."I was shocked. And flattered. She respects me that much that she wants to pen an article with me. So that was a great compliment.
The next day, I met with one of the editors of Canon, which is the literary magazine put out by the GF. He wanted to use my adapted memoir essay but wanted me to make some changes. So that night, I went home and got to work, planning initially to only make the cuts he suggested and fine-tune it a bit.
Around 3 a.m., though, I decided to get out a journal that I kept about five years ago. I was surprised by what I found. And it inspired me. So I did more of a re-write and was really happy with it in the end. Whether or not it's good enough to be published is another thing. We shall see. The important thing is that I can read it again. A sure sign, to me, that it's good. I'll try to be better at this. I have some thesis stuff to write about but I won't do it now, as I'm going to go work on it some more while finishing my third cup of coffee.
