Super Bowl Monday
Sometime toward the end of last week, I began to feel a little Super Bowl fever. Despite being nowhere near the U.S., and regardless of the fact that the NFL doesn't really do much for me and I can't remember the last time I tuned into the big game, I had to watch this one.
So without the fanfare of the commercials and a party with bad food, I tuned into the live SBS telecast of the Super Bowl on Monday morning. SBS is a station here with a long government-funded history of providing "multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia's multicultural society."
To help the people who tuned in but knew little about the game, the telecast included an American host (I'm pretty sure he was American; it's getting harder and harder to tell), as well as Sav Rocca who is a Philadelphia Eagles kicker who used to play in the Australian Football League. There was another Australian who also played in the NFL, but I can't remember his name even though I told myself I would.
Dick Stockton and Sterling Sharpe played the announcer roles for the international viewers. It was easy to tell because of the mini-tutorial about the fake first-down line.
And then there was that game. I tuned in for the story of it. I wonder what it's like in New York right now?
